The Legend:
In most temples, a sculptor carves a deity from stone or wood. The story of the Radharaman temple is unique because the deity was never carved.
Gopala Bhatta Goswami, a devotee, was worshipping twelve Shaligram Shilas (sacred round stones found in the Gandaki river). A wealthy merchant visited and offered him jewelry and clothes for a deity, but Gopala Bhatta only had round stones. He felt a deep pang of sadness, wishing he had a deity form to dress and decorate. He prayed intensely that night.
By morning, one of the round stones had metamorphosed. It had sprouted a head, a body, and legs, manifesting as a perfect tri-bent (Tribhanga) form of Krishna, while the back of the deity remained the rough stone of the Shaligram. It is said to be the only deity in the world that is self-manifested (Svayambhu) from a fossilized stone solely due to the intensity of a devotee's desire.
